Euro 2024: Trippier’s childhood pals off to Berlin in custom campervan
The seven friends will be arriving in the German capital on Saturday before cheering on the Three Lions from the official Brandenburg Gate fan zone on Sunday evening.
After watching England beat the Netherlands on Wednesday night in the semi-final with a last gasp Ollie Watkins wonder strike, the pals’ “joke” to go to Berlin for the final soon turned into serious plans.
Matty Tinker, 38, from Tottington, said: “My friend Dale has a bar in his garden and we were all watching the semi-final match together there on Wednesday night.
“We were jumping around and celebrating after the win when one of the lads, Jordan, suggested that we drive to Berlin to watch the final.
“We thought it was a joke, just a passing comment at first but then plans actually started coming together.”
Matty and friends Dale Parry, Adam Cooke, Jay Hunter, Jordan Brown, Jay Lyall and Aaron Thomas set off from Bury at lunchtime on Friday, July 12 in a bespoke campervan which they had managed to swiftly transform just for the occasion.
Bury Print Design customised the van, which belongs to Dale, with a life-size vinyl cut out of England manager Gareth Southgate, England flags and the famous ‘three lions’ badge alongside Keiran Trippier’s face.
It has also been emblazed with the words with “Bury Lads on Tour!!” and “Come on England!” in bold font.
The group grew up in Bury with brothers, Keiran, Chris, Curtis and Kelvin Trippier and are still in touch with the famous family.
Construction worker Matty added: “Obviously we’re hoping that England can pull it out of the bag on Sunday and win.
“But I know we’ll have a laugh on the trip either way.”
